Family Life in our Family Room | Update

A comfortable family room, featuring a stylish mid-century modern sectional is the perfect place to relax and enjoy family life.

Wow, life as a family of four has been busy!

Back in June, we welcomed our family’s newest addition…another sweet baby girl! She is such a sweetheart, truly the happiest and most loving little soul I could have imagined. And so for the past four months, we have been basking in the joy of a new baby, including sleepless nights and around-the-clock feedings, all of which have taken up a lot of our time. But in a completely and totally wonderful way.

So if you have been wondering why it’s been so quiet around here lately, that is why.

While I was pregnant, I had such good intentions. I thought I would have my work commitments wrapped up and a few pre-planned posts scheduled for after baby’s arrival so that I would be able to take a few months to worry about nothing but our family. But boy oh boy was I was so wrong. Ella arrived three weeks early which threw me for a loop! I didn’t have anything finished and I actually spent the first few weeks of her life finishing all of the projects I had on the go. But after that, I was able to relax..a little bit.

We spent lazy days at home as a family of four, getting to know our newest addition. And I am so happy that we had finished one of our biggest projects to date before Ella’s arrival.

Earlier this year we started talking about renovating our home’s lower level. We were outgrowing our main living space and were finding it more and more difficult to work, play and relax in our home. I truly believe a home can be both beautiful and functional, no matter what stage of life you are in. And while we would have loved to sell and build our dream home, that just wasn’t a reality at the time. So instead we got busy planning how we could make our home work harder for our growing family.

And oh my goodness, am I ever glad we did!

We transformed our unused basement into a family room, playroom and home office (see the reveal here). And it has been working very, very hard for us, especially during these past four months.

Whether Zoe heads downstairs to play while we prep dinner or I sneak away for a few minutes of quiet time to answer work emails, this is a space we can’t get enough of. But usually, it’s all four of us. Nick and I curled up on our amazing sofa (seriously, the best!), sipping coffee (you know…those sleepless nights) and snuggling Ella while Zoe lets her imagination run wild in her playroom.

To be honest, I was really worried when choosing furniture for this space. I knew whatever we picked would have to be able to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. And our Sven sectional from Article has done just that.

I fell in love with its clean lines and sophisticated style, but its practicality has my heart. From playdates with sweet, but rambunctious kiddos to cozy family movie nights this sofa has seen it all and hasn’t let us down yet. Even our sweet boy, Elliott, loves it! I know this is a piece that will be in our home for a long time.

It’s been so nice to have this cozy little space we can gather in as a family. I feel like so many people think basements are dark and cold, I used to be one of those people too! But with a little bit of thought and planning, we took our dated basement and made it into this amazing extra living space to enjoy. We love spending time down here, we are probably down here more than we are upstairs now which has totally surprised me. Nick and I even do date night down here every Friday night. We make a big batch of homemade nachos and catch up on our favorite TV shows…it’s the best way to unwind.

If you’re thinking of investing in a new sofa and have any questions about our sectional, I am always happy to chat, just send us an email. 🙂

Isn’t it sweet, Laura? Zoe loves it so much and will play school for hours. It’s also been so great for her practicing her writing and numbers. I am thinking of getting one for outside next summer too! xo

Hi Lise, thanks for the compliment! We love this space and this feature wall has made all the difference. Since I custom built it into the space, I didn’t draw up adaptable plans for other people’s spaces. If I decide to do so in the future I will definitely let you know!
