Front Porch Decorating Ideas for Fall

Welcome guests to your home this autumn with these simple and inexpensive front porch decorating ideas for fall.

For us, fall decorating usually begins at our front door with a whole lot of mums, pumpkins, and squash. It’s one of my favourite ways to welcome the fall season and make our home feel warm and inviting. And even though I love decorating our porch now, there was a time when it would just sit empty and bare, all year long. I put all of my energy into decorating the inside of our home, and would usually run out of steam when the time came to make the outside look just as pretty. But I’ve learned it doesn’t have to take a long time or cost a lot of money.

Whether you have a grand front entrance or a tiny porch leading to your front door, adding seasonal touches can be easy and inexpensive (see our fall porch last year). There are a few ideas and thoughts I always rely on when decorating our porch, no matter what season it is, so today I thought I’d share them with you.

Your Front Porch Should Reflect the Inside Of Your Home

Just as each room inside of your home should flow well together, the outside is no exception. For most, the front porch is where your guests will enter your house and it’s the first glimpse they get into your home, aesthetic and lifestyle. So you want to make a good first impression, right?

I love neutrals and soft muted colours, so our front porch reflects that. This year I bought white mums and a variety of pumpkins and squash in shades of white, yellow and green. There are no surprises when you walk through our front door, you’re greeted by a very similar style and colour palette in our home.

Incorporate Natural Elements

Obviously, the mums, decorative cabbage, pumpkins, and squash are all natural elements. But I also like to include pieces made of natural materials, like a jute rug and wood baskets. This is the same rule I use inside of our home, bringing in natural elements helps to add texture and interest to your space.

Reuse and Repurpose

Another favourite tip that I use both inside and outside of our home. For the most part, when I’m decorating our home I always try to buy pieces that can be reused from season to season or that can be repurposed in other rooms of our home. Now, once the fall season is over our mums and pumpkins will be long gone, but the beautiful wood baskets I used as planters will always look good on our front porch. I use them from the spring right through until the winter as planters for flowers and evergreens. They’d also look so cute filled with pumpkins or gourds next fall.

I didn’t swap out wreaths this year, simply because I couldn’t find one that I loved. But I think the olive wreath is classic and timeless and works well from spring right through until autumn.

Decorating our front porch only took a few hours between heading to the store to buy mums and pumpkins and bringing them home to set up. Remember to be creative and think outside of the box, decorating your home should be fun! Speaking of fun, Ella loves our fall porch. Every time we are outside she just has to visit our front porch and loves piling the squash right in front of the door. And I have fun seeing everyone in our family enjoy the little touches I add for the season.

Now, I hope you’ll take some time to visit our friends below and be inspired by all of their beautiful fall porches…
