Transitional Style Coffee Table Building Plans

This post is sponsored by Kreg Jig

Recently we made a few changes to our living room, and it feels cozier than ever. One of the changes we made was the addition of a beautiful new coffee table. It’s simple, classic and of course, it was built by Nick.

Nick also built our original coffee table years ago, and I still really love it so we gave it a new home in our family room.

When it came to designing our new coffee table, I had a transitional style in mind. I wanted a piece that felt both modern and timeless. Nick designed it to have clean lines and thoughtful details, like an inset top and tapered legs. It’s these little details that set it apart while giving it the look and feel of a high-quality piece of furniture.

We used our wood of choice, white oak. We love white oak because the natural undertones appear lighter in tone than their red oak counterpart. It has well-defined, long-grain rays throughout, and it is a little harder than red oak. Our coffee table is a central part of our living space, the kids used it all of the time, so we wanted to use a wood that is durable and stands up to daily wear and tear.

We stained the coffee table using Early American by Varathan, which we love because it is a perfect mid-tone brown with warm undertones. It is the stain colour we use the most.

Overall, this project is a moderately difficult plan, but you can make it easier if you decide not to add the angles to the bottom of the legs. In total it is only fourteen pieces of wood with simple cuts involved, and using a Kreg Jig makes the joinery very simple and straightforward. There is no special knowledge needed, if you own a drill, saw, and Kreg Jig, then you can tackle this project in a weekend!

One of the benefits of building your own furniture pieces is the cost savings. We looked at similar coffee tables from various retailers and they all came in around $500-$1500, but Nick built this table for just under $200!

Supplies

  • 1 – 4 x 8′ plywood – $100
  • 4 – 2 x 2 x 8′ boards – $50
  • Screws – $10
  • Early American Minwax – $10

Total: $170

This coffee table is the perfect addition to our living room, it’s actually very similar in design to the nightstands Nick built for our bedroom. I love adding these beautiful, high-quality pieces to our home, you can see all of the pieces Nick has built here.
