Adding Holiday Decor to Our Kids’ Bedrooms

Our girls definitely take after me, as they cannot wait to start decorating for the holiday season. They usually start asking to put up their Christmas trees the day after Halloween. I absolutely love that they love this holiday tradition so much.

When it comes to decorating the girls’ bedrooms for the season, I let them have fun and choose the pieces they want to use. While I still prefer the less is more approach, I want them to enjoy their spaces and embrace their creativity while they are at it.

We have one bin filled with their holiday decor and they get to pull from it, it usually all comes together well, as most of the pieces work together and are within the same colour palette. They love that they get to decorate their own spaces and I love seeing how proud they are once they’ve finished.

An Equestrian-Inspired Christmas

It came as no surprise that Zoe wanted to incorporate a horse-themed tree in her bedroom this year. About two years ago she took a sudden interest in horses and we haven’t looked back yet. She’s still loving her riding lessons, and you may remember we threw her the sweetest horse-themed birthday party last year and even gave her bedroom an easy update to embrace her love of horses.

I loved her idea of a horse-themed Christmas tree too, so we pulled out her collection of horse figurines and nestled her favourite ones into the branches of her miniature tree. We thought about turning the horses into permanent tree ornaments with these and adding a pretty ribbon to each, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to commit her toys to a life of hanging on Christmas trees. So propping them up on the branches worked just as well.

Continuing with her horse theme, Zoe thought it would be fun to decorate her toy horse stable too. We added miniature wreaths to the stable doors and bottle brush trees on her dresser top to create a festive winter wonderland for her horses.

A Playfully Whimsical Christmas

While Zoe stuck with a simple and subdued theme, Ella’s personality shone through with her fun and colourful holiday decor. Our girl loves colour and pattern and everything in between, and this is how she embraces decorating too.

Over the years we’ve collected some sweet and playful holiday ornaments which all made their way onto her Christmas tree for a fun and whimsical look. And while there is no specific theme, the ornaments work together as they are all within the same pastel colour palette. Her Christmas tree is as sweet as she is.

The only other holiday decor we added to her bedroom are these homemade Christmas houses and bottle brush trees. This is a project Zoe and I took on a few years ago and we’ve been talking about making more ever since. We painted simple wooden houses from the craft store in playful colours and added glittery snow and colourful bottle brush trees to each. It was so simple, but so much fun!

The girls absolutely love their holiday bedrooms, and we hope we’ve inspired you to let your little ones decorate their own spaces too.
