Four Simple Ways to Decorate for Fall

The past few weeks have seen me slowly incorporating a few new pieces throughout our home while we transition seasons. I’ve been holding onto summer just a little bit longer this year, but I am ready to fully embrace autumn with a home that will keep us feeling cozy and warm as the weather turns cooler and the days become shorter.

I prefer to lean into subtle changes that reflect the season, a new piece of art, cut branches from the yard or a sweet-smelling candle. It’s about creating little moments throughout your home that speak to the season ahead.

Four Simple Ways to Decorate For Fall

1. Branches and Stems

As the seasons change, I swap our leafy green or flowering foliage for branches and stems ablaze in autumn’s colour palette. I like to incorporate a mix of natural grasses, fall branches and dried hydrangeas throughout our home for an effortless foray into autumn.

In the kitchen, two large oak branches create a simple centrepiece, while natural grasses add a textural element to the living room and dried hydrangeas add a hint of fall colour to dining room.

Cuttings from your very own backyard are an easy and inexpensive option, but if you don’t have access to the real thing investing in high-quality artificial stems and branches that will last year after year, is another great option. Whether real or artificial, branches and stems are a simple way to infuse your home with the warm colours and textural elements of fall.

1. Autumnal Art

I love incorporating vintage art into our home. Whether it’s a beautifully framed piece found at a local flea market or an inexpensive print on canvas, these pieces are an easy way to add character and charm to any space.

As we transition into fall, I love to mix in a few new pieces of autumnal art. The scenes depicted in these pieces not only create a feeling of nostalgia but are an easy way to add subtle fall colour to a space. I usually opt for smaller prints and layer them alongside our permanent pieces. It’s a simple touch that is easy to change as the seasons change.

3. Fall-Scented Candles

There are very few things that evoke the spirit of fall as easily as the warm and inviting scents associated with the season. Incorporating a couple of fall-scented candles throughout your home is a simple way to create a cozy atmosphere. I like to opt for scents like pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, or cedarwood.

Place these candles strategically around your home, whether in the living room or kitchen, each room will be infused with the delightful aroma of autumn. The soft, flickering candlelight is also the perfect way to add ambiance to your space on rainy afternoons and dark evenings.

4. Seasonal Produce

Once again, I love taking my cues from nature. As autumn is the season of harvest, we are blessed with so much beautiful and delicious produce, and using that produce is an easy way to embrace the fall season in your home.

My favourite way to do this is with pumpkins. Of course, I love piling our porch full of pumpkins each fall, but this year I also layered a mix of pumpkins and squash among our kitchen shelves as a playful nod to the season. I chose to use a mix of light blue, dark green and white pumpkins to add a bit of contrast and evoke a sense of coziness. The dark green ones are a variety of squash called Sweet Mama and will make a delicious meal at the end of the season.

A bowl full of apples or pears placed on the kitchen counter is another simple and inexpensive way to use seasonal produce to embrace the fall season. And again, it’s an edible treat that won’t go to waste.

Transitioning your home from summer to fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. Take your time to add a few simple and subtle changes and you’ll create a cozy and inviting home to enjoy all season long. If you need even more fall inspiration, we have pinned our favourites here.
